Kurnst Soul Folk: Page Four
audio: Kurnst(B) (Lionel Gentle) & Jack(W) (Erica Liez)
Woman

If you come back we could start over.

Kurnst(B)

I don’t know I want to go back.

Woman

We could start over, Kurnst, forget all the rest.

Kurnst(B)

Just us?

Woman

The three of us, together.

Kurnst(B)

That’s what I miss.

Woman

Whatever you’ve done, it don’t matter.

Kurnst(B)

Gotta do something.

Woman

All that matter we together.

Kurnst(B)

Yeah.

Woman

Come back with me.

Kurnst(B)
(after a pause)

On my way.

SCREEN PROJECTION: Shadows. The screen is lit from behind and shadows run and move across it. Some of the shadows come up close to the screen, growing larger. They increase in number, dizzying in their presence.

Dorothy

When you doing your things for sure you care, how people gon’ take you; chasing parameters set forth . Cut up your music feeling this history, redefining. How that gon’ be when asses ain’t shaking? Who gon’ understand? Jet magazine? Gon’ deconstruct you? You gotta straddle worlds, is what it is, yearning context and ain’t none you gon’ care for you want to be taken really, digested, some money ain’t minstrel and plain. How you gon’ be everyman? You every black man.

audio: Dorothy (Marie Hughley), Kurnst(B)(Lionel Gentle)& Woman(B) (Monique J. Askew)

Kurnst

Piss you off story all fucked but in the end all of a sudden everything wonderful. Still fucked but everybody, you know, good, despite all.

Jack(W)

They all end happy.

Kurnst

Yeah, but there ain’t nothing really and all of a sudden from nowhere some enlightenment shit how good things be.

Jack(W)

And so? They end beautifully, they always do.

Kurnst

Then how you believe them?

Jack(W)

You have to want to, first.

Kurnst
(after a pause)

I want to.

Jack(W)

Then you just do.

*

Kurnst

Come this way, lose interest, hate a lot of people and myself. Be, a way. How? Forty different directions, fuck a lot of things, go harder, softer, can’t get this thing like I had it, all fucked and there is nobody who, nobody who, there is nobody who, and really—no desire. (pause) You. Love you. Await—you. Pause. A lot of people and myself. Can’t stand myself. This why I run. (pause) “Hast seen this—black vesper’s pageants.”

Kurnst moves upstage.

audio: Kurnst (Robert Wells Youngs)

He turns and departs quickly. Woman(B) moves upstage, into the spotlight.

Woman(B)

Re-set, rebirth.
Resurrect my love, my reservations.
When I saw roses, everywhere, gleaming
Was my end, my beauty, tiptoeing away, dancing,
laughing.
To be my beginning.

She turns and departs. The lights fade.

SCREEN PROJECTION: Film of the 7 actors (and child) continues to play, segueing into the passing road viewed at the beginning of the piece. It plays a few moments more then fades.
